You may have noticed that construction hasn't quite ground to a halt in the New York City area. Projects that have been deemed "essential" are generally allowed to proceed, though applications may be required depending on the jurisdiction. In New York City, applications to be deemed essential or for emergency work can be submitted on the DOB Now portal. In Jersey City, applications can be submitted through the city's HEDC website. Most applications require a detailed plan for how the jobsites will remain safe for workers.
On Friday, NYC's Department of Buildings released an interactive map showing active "essential" construction sites throughout the city. After 35,000 job sites were ordered closed after Cuomo's executive order, NYC now shows over 5,000 job sites are active - a number expected to dramatically increase as applications are approved over the coming weeks.
